Sebastião Salgado is a Brazilian photographer born in 1944. He has always worked in black and white and only recently moved across to digital.
Sebastião Salgado’s photojournalist and social documentary work has laid bare humankind, highlighting chaotic and nightmarish conditions in his own unique way. He has a sensitive way of capturing emotion on film which has resulted in multiple books (Workers and Migrations) and exhibitions in a career spanning many decades. His images are heart wrenching and came at a great cost to him and his wife Lelia. To this end, Salgado moved away from social documentary work to photograph Genesis, (an eight year project) concentrating on the natural world, photographing the planet’s last undamaged places.
